Answer the actual prompt
Start with the programme’s instructions, questions, and word limit. A personal statement, motivation letter, and scholarship essay may ask for different things. Make a separate outline for each application.
Build around evidence
- Your interest: explain the academic question or experience that draws you to the subject.
- Your preparation: describe a relevant project, course, job, or activity and what you learned.
- Your fit: connect your goals to specific features of the programme.
- Your direction: explain how the study supports a realistic next step.
Instead of saying “I am passionate about research,” describe the problem you investigated, what you did, and how it shaped your interests.
Revise for clarity and accuracy
Check that every claim is true and that the statement sounds like you. Remove copied language, unsupported praise, and details unrelated to the prompt. Follow the institution’s rules on outside or AI assistance, and ask someone to check clarity without replacing your own work.
Continue your research
Check the destination and provider’s official instructions for your own course.
